Swan Medicine

Dr. Sarah Swanson, DACM, LAc.

I’ve been drawn to medicine for as long as I can remember. And in truth, natural medicine has always been in my blood. My Korean grandmother practiced herbalism, and I grew up with acupuncture and herbs as a routine part of life. It wasn’t until much later, though, and over and over again that I realized just how powerful Traditional Chinese Medicine is and how much I wanted to devote my life to it.

I found my way to Chinese Medicine initially for pain. After trying for years to recover from a car accident, acupuncture was what “moved the needle” (pun intended) and enabled me to do the things I’d loved again. In fact, so many aspects of Chinese Medicine helped me reconnect with my body and later I realized, my spirit too.

Becoming pregnant with and then birthing my daughter during graduate school gave me a deep and personal understanding of fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum care. At the time it felt crazy, and well, it still does, but what I realized through this experience was how deeply I underestimated how much things would change after birth. I am particularly passionate about postpartum care. After the birth of my daughter I felt like I had a new brain struggling to manage so many emotions all while my physical body was trying to piece back together.

It was in this space of sleepless nights, endless diaper changes, tears and twilight mornings that I began dreaming about what Swan Medicine would become. A hand to hold from your very first thought about trying to get pregnant all the way to the WTF of postpartum life and parenthood. I know what kind of havoc hours of bouncing a baby or carrying a toddler around can have on your body and am committed to the idea that you don’t have to suffer through the pains.

For me, this medicine is about more than treating symptoms—it’s about helping you feel like yourself —balanced, resilient and present enough to take in the joy that surrounds you in each season of life. And if we can laugh a little along the way, even better.

How we work together

Caring for ourselves in the throes of motherhood doesn’t have to feel clinical. I offer care from the comfort of your home*. I am a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist that uses Traditional Chinese Medicine to support the body through the physical and emotional fluctuations that naturally arise through preconception/fertility treatment, pregnancy, lactation, postpartum, and the rigors of caregiving. These are rapid and extreme physiological transformations that are unparalleled across the lifespan. I primarily use acupuncture and herbal medicine along with moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, and asian bodywork as needed. Chinese Medicine is a highly tailored medicine. I treat what I see each time I see you. I address patterns, sometimes starting at the root, other times taking care of a branch symptom first. At your initial visit, we’ll go over your health history, primary concerns and discuss a customized treatment plan. In many cases, I create custom herbal formulas for you to take as part of a treatment plan. I work with medicinaries around Portland that use the highest quality herbs for safety and best outcomes.

A note about this: We can treat in any space that you feel most comfortable. Baby sleeping in the bedroom? Living room it is. Beautiful sunny day outside? Why not the backyard? If you are comfortable, I am also happy to be on call for your baby after needles are in. In a perfect world, you wake from your deep rest with your baby well and accounted for.
