Frequently asked questions

Baby resting with parent during a treatment.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

During the initial visit, we will review your health history, discuss your treatment goals, identify areas where we can support you and discuss potential treatment plan options. The first visit is also an opportunity for me to get to know any family members, particularly little ones who might be home with us during the visit. Afterwards, we will move onto treatment. Please allow at least 1.5-2 hours.

How far do you travel?

I am currently available in Portland. If you do not live in Portland, please reach out and we can discuss if you live close enough in range for a visit. A small fee may apply for additional travel.

Do you treat pain?

Yes. In fact, orthopedic acupuncture is a second love of mine. In Chinese Medicine pain is a symptom of something in the body lacking free flow. I use acupuncture and sometimes adjacent therapies such as cupping, gua sha, e-stim and bodywork to help relieve pain. Orthopedic acupuncture can be extremely effective in areas such as the low back, neck and shoulders, and knees.

I just found out that I am pregnant. When should I start seeing you?

In a perfect world, I see you throughout your pregnancy. I can help with common first trimester symptoms, ride hormonal waves with you, and advise you on diet and lifestyle habits to help you feel your best throughout your pregnancy. Getting to know you early on will also help me better support you later as birth approaches. In an otherwise healthy low-risk pregnancy, I might see you every few weeks before we move to a more frequent cadence in the third trimester.

What does labor preparation look like?

Acupuncture can help prepare the body, notably the cervix for labor. Research has shown that acupuncture can decrease the need for medical interventions and shorten overall labor duration.

What does postpartum care look like?

The weeks and months after birth is a critical time for proper healing. In Chinese Medicine this is a time to move and nourish blood, essentially moving out the old and replenishing new. This level of care can help the body with new challenges such as breastfeeding and overall positive mental health.

It is best for me to see you 4-5 days after delivery on a weekly basis for at least 6 weeks.

How does acupuncture help assisted reproduction?

On the most basic level, acupuncture increases pelvic blood flow which is important for strong and healthy reproductive organs. Acupuncture is also a supportive tool for regulating and managing any stress, anxiety and depression, helping to build resiliency during what can be an extremely demanding time for the body and spirit.

How do you take an herbal formula?

Herbs come in many forms— patent pills, tinctures, powdered tea, and bulk herbal tea. We would work together to decide what would be best for you.

Do you take insurance?

Currently I do not bill insurance. I have found that the level of support needed surrounding perinatal care often does not fit into the conventional healthcare model. I spend on average much longer with patients than I could if billing insurance. I am more than happy to provide a super bill for insurance purposes if requested. Swan Medicine is considered an out of network provider, and most patients receive 50-80% reimbursement after their out of network deductible has been met.
